“Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade.” Mark 4:30-32
The Greater Baltimore Church of Christ will celebrate its 5th anniversary as a church and what would be its 15th anniversary as a region of the former Washington DC International Church of Christ on September 21st, 2008.
The work in Baltimore was begun as a Bible Talk as part of the DC church which was started by the Boston Church of Christ under the leadership of Russ and Gail Ewell in 1989. From that small group of disciples who drove to DC from Baltimore for church services God began an incredible work. In late 1992 and early 1993 this group had grown to become its own region within the DC Church. Led by many different couples such as Larry and Kim Reed, Chris and Kim Reed, Jay and Joy Belfont Valentine, Tim and Julie Huffman, and Ed and Nancy Dawson, the region continued to grow.
During the tumultuous times of 2003, Phil and Ayana Booker and the Consensus Leadership Group with the help of many others, successfully formed the Greater Baltimore Church of Christ, fulfilling the dream of the disciples in the Baltimore area. Shortly after its founding Douglas and Joyce Arthur were hired and led in a powerful way until called to be the lead ministry couple for the Boston Church of Christ. Doug and Jennifer Lambert who had come on staff in Baltimore in 2006 took over as the lead ministry couple and a few months later Dave and Leslie Brown joined the staff after leading the Pittsburgh Church. And just this week, Cash McHargue and Maria Dinallo were added as the full-time campus leaders.
God has truly blessed this small seed of faith as the Greater Baltimore Church of Christ now numbers 310 disciples scattered all over the greater Baltimore area. In the past 2 and one-half years, we have seen 80 souls baptized or restored and an incredible revival in the campus ministry which now numbers over 40 student disciples. Truly God has done, is doing, and will continue to do amazing things. We invite all former and current members from the area and from all over to join us as we remember the past, celebrate the present and dream for the future on September 21st.
Chris and Kim Reed, now of the Denver Church, will be our special guest speakers on Sunday. On Saturday we will have a picnic for all current and former members with the Reeds and on Sunday we will meet a Long Reach High School in Columbia at 10:00 am for our anniversary service and reception to follow.
