On Sunday the Chicago Church joined the Campus disciples for a combined church service of roughly 4500. In a fantastic display of generosity and love, $22,000 was donated to Chance for Africa. Everyone involved in Chance for Africa says a big "Thank You!" to all the students and Chicago disciples who contributed. Please check back at the www.ChanceforAfrica website in a few weeks to see the photos of the children that will get to go to school because of your offering. Chance for Africa is a charity administered by the Elders and board of our ICOC Church in San Antonio (Mission Point Christian Church). It helps the children of African disciples pay their school fees so that they can get an education.
2100 campus disciples are gathered in Chicago for the 2010 Campus Conference. Steve Stevenson from Los Angeles preached a phenomenal message. The conference has grown in size from 300 in San Antonio in 2005 to its current 2100+ attendance. Next year's conference will be split. Denver will host the West ICMC, while Athens, Georgia will host in the East.
Day 2 was awesome at the Chicago Campus Conference. 2100 campus students boarded buses at dawn and rode over to Englewood to clear lots and serve the community. Mayor Daley and a host of public officials came out to thank the students for their service. Friday night the hall was full to hear Chip Mitchell, evangelist from Boston, preach about camaraderie and brotherhood. It was an incredible night.
With over 2000 campus disciples attending here in Chicago, this campus conference is perhaps our largest ever.
The 2010 Campus Conference is off to a great start in Chicago tonight. Held on Lake Shore Drive at the Hyatt Hotel (inside the McCormick Center), the conference has attracted students and ministers from all across North America. Leaders gathered in the afternoon for a leaders workshop, and then Thursday night well over 2000 students packed into the huge hall for the grand opening ceremony. It was awesome! Chris Zillman preached an inspiring message. Please pray that the weekend will be even more exciting!
Tomorrow attendees at the ICOC International Campus Ministry Conference (ICMC) will join with HOPE worldwide in a Day of Service in the 16th Ward, located in the Greater Englewood community. Englewood has 2,000 vacant lots littered with trash and debris. According to Keith Calloway, Commander of the Chicago Police Department’s 7th District, this attributes to local violence. The neglected land reflects a lack of care and concern – resulting in more harmful acts in and to the community.
In addition to property clean-up, a lead testing program is also proposed at the site. Chicago leads the nation in the number of children identified with lead poisoning.
My family and I moved here in April 2010 to work with the Youth and Family ministry. We had been in Chicago for the last fifteen years and were in Minneapolis for the previous five. What an adventure to move across the world!
The purpose for our move was to help develop Youth & Family ministry in the Joburg Church. As we do so, we are going to be blogging about our experiences and sharing materials on occasion on this site.
We just finished the first-ever Youth & Family Conference in Africa. It was incredible. You can see the previous story for details.
